Every Day I’m Tumblin’ The Best Songs of 2009

Ranking songs beyond ten or twenty favorites in a year gets kind of arbitrary, and since my list is really long I’m just going to list them in reverse alphabetical order (zany!). Today we start with “Y” since I didn’t hear any songs I loved by bands starting with the letter “Z” this year. But before we start, here are some band names for aspiring buzz bands to capitalize off of this opportunity, helpfully sorted by genre:

Chill Wave: Zig Zag Brand Quality Cigarette Rolling Papers, ‘Za (As In Pizza), Z 80’s, Z Mountains, Z Beach, Z Chills, Z 8-Track Cartridge, Lay-Z, Hay-Z, Woo-Z

Precious Indie Pop With Overly Long Name: Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt and the Machine, Zelda and the Lodwicks, Zabrina and the Rhinestones, Zsa Zsa & The Toxic Unexceptionals

Garage: The ZZ, Z Girls, Zen-o-phobic, Zamboni, Z Black, Z Crystal, Z Antler

Metal: Zarathustra, Zealots

Dubstep: Zanga, Zimba T, Ztream, Z-On, ZoomR, zIMpson

Now for the list! The best songs by bands starting with the letter “Y” this year are:

1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - “Heads Will Roll

2. Young Dro - “Dro Rock Diamonds

3. Young Governor - “English Tim

4. Your Twenties - “Annie” (demo)

5. Yacht - “Psychic City” and/or “Psychic City” (Classixx Remix - Fabio Pop Dancefloor Rework) but not the regular old Classixx Remix

6. Yo La Tengo - “Here To Fall

7. Young Money - “Every Girl

8. Yeasayer - “Ambling Alp

9. Years - “The Major Lift
