Welcome to part two in the continuing series Every Day I’m Tumblin’ The Best Songs of 2009, you can find part one here. Today brings us to the best songs of the year by bands starting with the letter “X.” Unfortunately, much like the letter “Z,” “X” is an oft-neglected letter when it comes to christening new bands, this despite the rich history of “X” bands such as X and…Xzibit. Now for the list!
The best songs by bands starting with the letter “X” this year are:
1. The xx - “Crystalised”
Not since Young Marble Giants’ “Credit In The Straight World” has a “rock” band done so much with so little, coaxing beauty out of single notes, silence, and tension. “Crystalised” is not just the best song of 2009 by a band starting with the letter “X,” it’s also my pick for best song of the year.
This was the only band starting with the letter “X” that made a song I loved this year, please leave a comment if I missed anyone.

Ranking songs beyond ten or twenty favorites in a year gets kind of arbitrary, and since my list is really long I’m just going to list them in reverse alphabetical order (zany!). Today we start with “Y” since I didn’t hear any songs I loved by bands starting with the letter “Z” this year. But before we start, here are some band names for aspiring buzz bands to capitalize off of this opportunity, helpfully sorted by genre:
